We have heard the Clinton campaign call for Bernie Sanders to drop out repeatedly over the past few months. They have even gone so far as to say the primary is over and Hillary Clinton has it locked up. I am beginning to wonder if even the Clinton camp believe their own lies. I ask this because today Eric Lee who is a campaign representative for Clinton has initiated a transatlantic challenge for a single delegate.
In March Bernie won the democrats abroad primary by a wide margin, earning nearly 70% of the votes. This allocated 9 delegates for Bernie and 4 to Clinton. All seemed well until the Democrats Abroad Electors met in Berlin this week to vote for delegates. Once assembled the Clinton campaign has launched a protest by filing a challenge to the Democrats Abroad rules committee to allocate one of Bernie’s delegates to Hillary.
If Hillary really had the primary and Democratic National Convention locked up would she go through all the efforts to fight for a single delegate that she is not even entitled to?
Of course she wouldn’t, this is far from over and the Clinton camp knows it.
If there is any way possible that you can show up at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 25 – 28 you MUST do so. Start making plans now, book your hotel room, figure out your travel plans, take the summer semester off, find a sitter for the kids. Other than voting for Bernie this may prove to be the single most important thing we can do to ensure that Bernie wins the DNC nomination. This is too important for us not to give it our all. We must show up a hundred thousand strong to show our support for Bernie. Please Help.
If Bernie does not walk out of the DNC victorious we need to urge Bernie to use his concession speech to announce he is leaving the Democratic Party and uniting with Jill Stein of the Green Party. They will spear head a three-year way presidential run off while at the same time announcing that a new party will be formed by combining Sanders supporters, independents, the Green Party and inviting all the other minor progressive and labor parties. This will become the largest political party in the US. One that is dedicated to representing the American people, not Wall Street and multinational corporations.
Here is a Statement of the Sanders supporters at the Democrats Abroad convention in Berlin that is occurring this week.
The Democrats Abroad Global Convention in Berlin opened today with the Clinton campaign making an attempt to snatch a delegate away from Bernie Sanders.
In March’s Global Presidential Primary, Sanders won nearly 70% of the votes. Following this, the leadership of Democrats Abroad allocated 9 delegates to Sanders and 4 to Clinton, following the rules of proportional representation as in all other state primaries.
In Berlin, the Democrats Abroad Electors will choose delegates to fill those positions.
But at the last minute, the Clinton campaign filed a challenge, asserting that it deserved 5 delegates. Their argument is convoluted: they assert that the decision of the Democrats Abroad leadership to treat the delegation as a single block, and allocating delegates accordingly, led to an unfair result in the final, global part of the selection process. We do not believe this to be the case.
The Rules Committee of Democrats Abroad is considering their challenge. At their meeting this morning, Sanders’ campaign representative Eric Lee urged them to dismiss the Clinton challenge which would disenfranchise thousands of voters.
Larry Sanders, the candidate’s older brother, is participating in the three-day event. He pointed out that the Clinton campaign has been saying that the primary is over, yet in its decision to fight over a single delegate — to which it is not entitled — it shows that Sanders is very much still in the race.
While we await results of the Rules Committee decision, Sanders supporters at the Berlin meeting say they will not accept anything less than the 9 delegates allocated. They will consider next steps if the ruling is in Clinton’s favor.
